Recently, due to the US's reciprocal tariff policy, the Finnish company HMD Global seems to have planned to exit the US mobile phone market.
According to a statement provided by HMD to the media, in view of the current challenging geopolitical and economic environment, the company has decided to reduce its operations in the United States after careful consideration.
The statement emphasized that the first priority is to ensure a smooth transition for users and partners, and HMD will continue to fulfill all commitments, including warranty and service for existing products, and provide full support through the global team.
Although the statement only used a conservative description such as "reducing operations", the media generally believed that HMD was preparing to exit the US market.
Since HMD obtained the Nokia brand license in 2016, it has been responsible for the production and sales of Nokia-branded mobile phones, but the license is about to end in March 2026.
Therefore, HMD has gradually started to "de-Nokia" since 2023, stopped launching Nokia smartphones, and fully focused on developing HMD's own brand.
Currently, HMD's online store in the United States has been closed, and the "Where to buy" button on the official product introduction page is also unavailable. HMD phones are still available for sale on e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, but they may just be clearing out inventory.
However, all parties believe that HMD's withdrawal from the US mobile phone market will have limited impact on its overall operations. The company currently still focuses on Europe, India and other regions as its main markets.
