Nestlé Group CEO Laurent Freixe was dismissed immediately following an internal investigation for violating the company's code of conduct by engaging in an undisclosed "office romance" with a subordinate. This sudden leadership shakeup not only swiftly dismissed the CEO, who had only been in office for a year, but also created further uncertainty for Nestlé, which is already facing multiple challenges.
The business giant Nestlé was recently shaken after its CEO's departure, following allegations of an alleged office romance that were subsequently confirmed.
According to a report by the Financial Times on September 1st, Nestlé recently announced that it had dismissed CEO Laurent Freixe immediately following an investigation into his personal conduct. The investigation focused on an "undisclosed romantic relationship" between Freixe and a direct report, which was determined to have violated Nestlé's code of business conduct.
Nestlé Chairman Paul Bulcke stated: "This was a necessary decision. Nestlé's values and governance are the solid foundation of our company. I thank Laurent for his many years of service at Nestlé."
Freixe was promoted to Nestlé CEO in August 2022 after nearly 40 years at the company. However, just one year into the role, he was forced to resign due to personal conduct issues, undoubtedly creating significant instability within Nestlé's leadership.
Internal Complaint Sparks Investigation
According to sources familiar with the matter, the investigation into Freixe began in late spring of this year when multiple reports were received through Nestlé's internal complaint system, "Speak Up," regarding a personal relationship between Freixe and a colleague. Employees expressed concerns about potential conflicts of interest and favoritism.
Initially, Nestlé stated last month that an internal investigation had found these allegations to be "without merit." However, as internal complaints persisted, the Nestlé board of directors subsequently decided to launch a new investigation with the assistance of external lawyers. A person familiar with the matter said the investigation ultimately confirmed that the allegations against Freixe were "substantiated."
Nestlé faces multiple challenges as new CEO takes over
Following Freixe's departure, Nestlé quickly appointed Philipp Navratil as CEO. Navratil joined Nestlé in 2001 as an internal auditor and has since held various leadership positions in Latin America and the coffee business, most recently as head of Nespresso. He joined the executive board earlier this year.
Nestlé, which owns many well-known brands such as KitKat and Nescafé, is going through a challenging period. Freixe's departure further exacerbates the company's turmoil. During his tenure, Freixe sought to refocus Nestlé on its core businesses and rebuild a company culture he believed was lacking.
However, Nestlé's current problems extend far beyond this. In July, French authorities raided Nestlé's offices as part of an investigation into alleged unauthorized filtration methods used in its bottled mineral water. Nestlé also recalled contaminated frozen foods in the United States this year.
Share Price Under Pressure, Executive Changes Continue
Since reaching a high of 127 Swiss francs in 2022, Nestlé's share price has fallen by over 40%. Meanwhile, the company has been undergoing frequent leadership changes, with Chairman Paul Bulcke announcing his plans to step down in June.
Vontobel Bank analyst Jean-Philippe Bertschy noted that the leadership changes come at a "sensitive time" for Nestlé.
He added: "Nestlé has been under scrutiny... Philipp Navratil is an experienced leader with an excellent track record, and his appointment is encouraging, as investor nerves have been tested for several months."
